Govan Care Home Residents Welcome Ducklings for Easter

  • Submitted by: Annie Wells, Glasgow, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 23 April 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17256

That the Parliament congratulates the residents and staff of Florence House Care Home in Govan, Glasgow, on the successful hatching and rearing of five ducklings in time for Easter; acknowledges not only the joy and curiosity sparked by the ducklings, but also the deeply therapeutic benefits that they have brought to residents, particularly those living with dementia; recognises the efforts of wellbeing enabler, Leigha Cooke, and the wider care team in creating a meaningful and inclusive animal therapy experience that has made a lasting impact on the home; understands that leading organisations such as Dementia UK and the Alzheimer’s Society highlight the emotional and psychological value of animal interaction, especially for older adults; believes that simply watching or gently engaging with animals like ducklings can help to reduce anxiety, lift mood, and provide a calming sense of comfort, and that these small yet powerful moments of connection have been shown to ease distress and foster emotional engagement with the world around them, which, it understands, is often difficult to achieve through conventional means; notes what it sees as the overwhelmingly positive impact that this initiative has had on wellbeing, social engagement, and community spirit within Florence House, and commends all involved for bringing nature, nurture, and joy into the heart of the care home this Easter.
