That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the immense contribution of Margaret Mills MBE who worked tirelessly for Children First for over 54 years to support children and champion their rights until her sudden but peaceful passing on 28 March 2025; understands that Margaret spent her life working determinedly to improve the lives of children and families, transforming the lives of hundreds in the process; notes that this commitment to supporting children and their families spanned decades, since starting in the 1970s as one of the first female inspectors with the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, now known as Children First; understands that Margaret specialised in supporting children to recover from sexual, emotional and physical abuse at Children First’s service in the Scottish Borders, pioneering recovery support models, helping children to give evidence in court and bringing hope to countless lives even in the darkest of times; further understands that Margaret’s innovative and child-centred approach is now the bedrock for reforms being embedded across Scotland through the Bairns Hoose; notes that Margaret was appointed an MBE in 2011 for her service to the wellbeing of children and was shortlisted for the Robert Burns humanitarian award in 2013; pays tribute to Margaret’s devotion to listening to children and advocating for their views and rights that will continue to serve as an inspiration to many, and expresses its sincere condolences to Margaret’s family, friends, colleagues, community and the many children she supported on the loss that it believes will be felt deeply by many.
