Sir Alexander Fleming - Almost 100 Years Since the Discovery of Penicillin

  • Submitted by: Willie Coffey, Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 April 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17126

That the Parliament congratulates Darvel in East Ayrshire on its stunning mural of Sir Alexander Fleming; understands that Sir Alexander, a Darvel native, discovered penicillin in 1928, a discovery, which led to the introduction of antibiotics that have saved over 200 million lives; notes that the Darvel and Area Regeneration Team (DART) has planned a number of projects to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sir Alexander's most well-known achievement and the mural, which takes pride in the town centre at The Corner, is just one of them; recognises that, Rogue One, one of the finest street artists from Glasgow, who was commissioned to design and produce the mural, has blown the town away with his talent, and congratulates the town of Darvel for paying tribute to Sir Alexander Fleming, a hero recognised worldwide.
