  • Submitted by: Paul O'Kane, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 April 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17118

That the Parliament understands that the Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band took part in the 2025 New York Tartan Day Parade; acknowledges that the band consists of just under 40 young people who are pupils from seven of Renfrewshire’s high schools; notes that the band, which formed in 2017, played music at both the Tartan Day Parade and pre-parade in Bryant Park; further notes that the band had recent success when it became world champion in 2023 at the World Pipe Band Championships; commends Pipe Major Keith Bowes Jnr for leading the band to the US, and the parents and carers of the young pipers for supporting and funding the trip and ultimately helping their young loved ones to showcase their talent to the wider world; congratulates the band for having what Keith described as the “amazing unique opportunity to represent Renfrewshire and Scotland on a global stage”; further congratulates all the young band members, including Johnstone High pupils Rhys Colton and Kady McGuire, for grasping this special opportunity; wishes the band the very best of luck for the future, and congratulates it for the praise and exposure that it believes is rightly coming its way after representing Renfrewshire and the country on such a prestigious cultural occasion
